We all want our children to grow up having good values and morals. Our job as parents is to teach our children those important life lessons, so they can grow up to be the best human beings they can be. I know I am always looking for ways to turn everyday events into teaching moments for my 5-year-old daughter. The We Do Listen Foundation shares that same vision. The Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit corporation whose intention is to enable children to enjoy inner peace and communicate in a more effective way. They create entertaining, educational books, videos, games, and songs to help young children learn how to listen, learn important life lessons, and feel good about themselves. Children who learn these skills will grow up better informed to resolve conflicts and empowered to change the world.
My daughter has recently started testing us by telling little fibs. It was important for my husband and I to let her know right away that she was not making a good choice by doing that, and that she understands the ramifications for those choices. The We Do Listen Foundation offers a series of hardcover books to help parents drive home important lessons such as telling the truth. The book series features the character Howard B. Wigglebottom who is a cute bunny that gets himself into situations where he is faced with choices to make. We read the book, “Howard B. Wigglebottom and the Monkey on his Back: A Tale about Telling the Truth” with our daughter. Prior to reading the book, I wasn’t sure if she would be old enough at 5 years to grasp the concept and the lesson of the book. I was very impressed by the way she listened intently to the book and asked questions about the content. This series of books can definitely be effective and beneficial for kids even as young as age 5. The book delivers the message in a way that kids can relate and understand. The book contains illustrations that keeps kids interested and involved in the story. We will be reading this one regularly to reinforce the important lesson of telling the truth.
