My eldest son has nine days left of school. He is eagerly awaiting the ability to sleep in, in the mornings. He is also looking forward to no homework. And while some time off is essential and important to recharge his interest in learning, it is also important to continue the learning process over the summer. As a former teacher I understand that just because school is out of session doesn’t mean that learning should be discontinued. Dolls have come a long way since I was a kid. Dolls these days can do all sorts of things – talk, eat, dance, crawl… the list goes on and on. But swim? Yes! The new Moxie Girlz Magic Swim Mermaid does just that. My 5 year-old daughter was beside herself with joy when she saw this doll for the first time. First, she has really gotten into Moxie girls lately, and secondly, mermaids are a very hot trend right now among young girls. My daughter owns a few other mermaids, but none of them can swim like this one can! The mermaid runs on two AAA batteries and will swim on her own when placed in water. Maybe the best way to show you is through a video. As you will hear in the background, my daughter is quite excited about the mermaid’s performance!
It really is amazing. The mermaid’s tail looks very life-like as it moves. There are currently two Moxie Girlz Magic Swim Mermaids. We received the one named “Kellan”.
My daughter’s positives and negatives: She really liked the look of the doll – she has beautiful hair, freckles, and a cute outfit that is shimmery and purple, and she liked the way the doll could swim on her own by moving her tail. The only negatives she mentioned was that sometimes when you remove the doll from the water, she continues to move her tail. This is because there are two sensors on her lower back that, when wet, activate the movement. Once the sensors are dry, the movement stops.

The other positive I have found with the Moxie Girlz line is that the dolls are dressed fashionably while still being somewhat conservative. There are some other doll lines out there that I would rather not have my 5 year-old play with, as I feel the clothing is too revealing and does not promote a positive self-image. When buying the Moxie Girlz line, I can be confident that my daughter will see that you can dress trendy and still portray a positive self-image. You see a lot of mermaid dolls on the market that come with a tiny bikini top. The Moxie Girlz Magic Swim Mermaid comes with a top with more coverage but is still very cute and trendy. As the Moxie Girlz website says, “Every girl has the strength to do something amazing. Anything is possible as long as you stay true to yourself and never give up on your dreams!” That is a great message for every young girl!
I would recommend the Moxie Girlz Magic Swim Mermaid for any young girl out there in love with mermaids!

I recently read the second book in the Forgotton Castles series, The Forgiven Duke, written by Jamie Carie. I was excited to read this second novel as I really enjoyed the first, titled- The Guardian Duke. When I start a series I really like to finish it, especially if I enjoyed the first book. These stories are an inspirational, romantic, suspense type- that I enjoy to read. In the first book the two lead characters do not meet, but exchange letters. In this book they meet and fall in love, but the story isn’t over. This series is about more than just the romance between the two lead characters. It is also about her quest to find her parents, who are in trouble while on a treasure hunt.
I love that this series is about more than the love life of the main characters. It really gives the series depth and meaning by adding additional elements to the story. I also like that these books are have religious connotation. I must admit, I am anxiously waiting the final book in this series to find out if they find her parents before it is too late!
The Forgiven Duke will be available for sell this July.

Dolls are hit or miss for my 2 year old daughter. This is probably because she has an older brother and wants to play with what he is playing. However, when my daughter does play with dolls, she normally gives them a hug and says “baby” then she proceeds to throw them across the room. Obviously, because of her normal mode of play with dolls, I was a little nervous how she would respond with the new Lalaloopsy Sew Magical Mermaid doll.
She was pretty excited when we opened the package and in the box is the doll, a mermaid outfit, a swimsuit, and a squirting fish. It also shows pictures of the doll in the bath or on sand. I was immediately pleased, because I am always looking for tub toys for my daughter. The doll’s hair turns purple in cold water and pink in warm water. The first day she received the doll she carried her new baby around with her and when it was bath time she was excited to take her in there as well.
Since we received the doll, a couple of weeks ago, she has since stayed solely in the bathtub, but she could easily be transferred and played with in the tub or out.
Squirting toys are always a hit!
Incidentally my five year old son is fascinated how her hair turns color, so occasionally he takes her to the sink to change her hair color:)!
This doll is a hit in our house! The only thing to keep in mind is if you do put her in the tub, she has a little hole in her head. With the hole you will have water that gets in there, but you can squeeze most of it out. Just something to keep in mind.

I have mentioned before that I am a fan of giving gourmet food items as gifts. Sometimes the thought of gifting another “thing” can be daunting. For many adults when we reach a certain point in our lives, we just don’t need much more.
