Best Places to See in Oahu

Hawaii, in general, is a top destination within it's own right. But as most people know Hawaii is composed of eight different and distinct islands. I've only had the opportunity to visit Oahu {twice}, therefore my post is dedicated to some of sites I've found to be well worth a visit that are specific to this popular island.  Most people have limited time on the island so honing in on those destinations and activities that are the best fit for you are key. Quite obviously my list is skewed to my favorite activities. If you are a regular visitor to this site you'll know I prefer hiking, … [Read more...]

Best Things for Kids in Myrtle Beach

This post was created in partnership with the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce, opinions are my own.  Since we live in the Minneapolis area it might not seem that Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is a go-to destination for family fun. But Spirit airlines has a new direct flight to this coastal town and within a couple of hours snowbound Minnesota residents can be at the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. This April my crew and I explored this vacation town. Myrtle Beach Bound!  This was our first time in South Carolina so I had no previous level of understanding of the area or … [Read more...]

Family-Friendly Captain’s Quarters Resort in Myrtle Beach

This post was created in partnership with the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce, opinions are my own. Myrtle Beach is a family friendly city with lots to see and do, but a visit to Captain's Quarters Resort is a destination within itself. Multiple indoor and outdoor pools, a lazy river, a bowling alley, an arcade, restaurants, whirlpool hot tubs, an outdoor kiddie waterpark, ocean view rooms and, of course, the mighty Atlantic Ocean just a few feet away make Captain's Quarters a great place to stay when visiting Myrtle Beach!  There are lots of different room configurations, so … [Read more...]

Best Places to Eat Myrtle Beach

This post was created in partnership with the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce, opinions are my own.  If you follow me on Instagram you probably noticed that we recently visited the ocean town of Myrtle Beach.  A direct flight from Minneapolis to Myrtle Beach had us at the shores of the Atlantic Ocean in just a few hours. I'll be highlighting some of the must-see things to see and do in Myrtle Beach, but first I wanted to feature where to eat.  My boys are getting older now {ages 13, 10 and 8} and are no longer in the high maintenance baby or toddler stage, so eating … [Read more...]

Best Places to Stay Near Duluth, Minnesota

A visit to Duluth is a Minnesota staple. Unlike other ares in the state, Duluth and the surrounding shores of Lake Superior offer locals the chance to steps away from the typical Midwest look and feel. Duluth and the North Shore is distinct with it's rocky cliffs and deep expansive lake. Visiting in the summer and fall is my go-to, but it's certainly a destination year long.  Having visited this area since I was a child, I've stayed at a plethora of different places. Some locations have been extraordinary while others have been unmemorable. Of course, the season of your visit will have … [Read more...]

Dog Sitting with Care from Rover.com

This post was created in partnership with Rover.com, all opinions are my own.  This is Dougie. He's a labradoodle that thinks he is a little boy. He's a dog that doesn't seem to understand he weighs 110lbs and maybe shouldn't frolic around the house. He's a member of the family and my boys adore him.  Most of the time we are at home. I even work from home. But sometimes we need to travel and when we do Dougie has to find lodging elsewhere. Previously I've had Dougie stay at a local kennel. They are super friendly and I know they take good care of my dog. But it's … [Read more...]

Moose Mountain Falls Waterpark

While our visit to Moose Mountain Falls Waterpark was complimentary, all opinions are my own.  Waterparks and kids are synonymous. I'm not entirely sure when these fun-filled places began to pop up, but they sure didn't seem to be around when I was a kid. My biggest joy was a trip to the local swimming pool that had exactly one diving board and zero slides. These days my boys have visited their fair share of waterparks. Each site has their own special features and offerings and we discovered this was certainly true at our recent visit to Moose Mountain Falls Waterpark.  … [Read more...]

The Cove of Lake Geneva

While my stay in Lake Geneva was complimentary, all opinions are my own. There are a few tricks I've learned through the years by being a mom of three boys. Call them parenting hacks. Call them common sense. However you see the situation, with experience hopefully comes some degree of wisdom. A few of these bits of knowledge circle around ensuring my boys have a love of books and learning. At one point I felt that I had mastered the art of keeping a toddler entertained at a restaurant. But one of my more important and long lasting nuggets of enlightenment circles around traveling with … [Read more...]

Best 5 Things to See & Do in Lake Geneva with Kids

My visit to Lake Geneva was complimentary, however all opinions are my own. Nestled between Milwaukee and Chicago is the summer destination town of Lake Geneva. Full of quaint homes, shimmering waters, friendly locals, a vibrant downtown and lots of family-friendly things to do, Lake Geneva has long been a point of interest for those from Chicago. Traveling from Minneapolis the boys and I recently made our first visit to this pocket of Wisconsin.  We were eager to discover all the town had to offer and we were not disappointed. We conveniently stayed at The Cove of Lake Geneva … [Read more...]

Nerstrand Big Woods State Park

This fall we took a late season hike to Nerstrand Big Woods State Park. With all the fall leaves crunching at our feet rather than dangling from the tree tops, the woods seemed almost eerie. The park is best suited for hiking as there is not a ton of additional offerings, though there are camping spaces.  The highlight of the trip was a visit to the Hidden Falls. I'm not sure why this place is named Hidden Falls, as they the area didn't seem so hidden to me. I'm sure there is a story of some sort to provide an explanation.  While our visit lacked the beautiful fall colors … [Read more...]

14 Best Things to Do at Honey Creek Resort State Park

My visit to HoneyCreek Resort State Park was complimentary, however all opinions are my own. I've lived in the state of Minnesota for 16 years. During this time my exploration of Iowa has been fairly limited. Yes, we made a short trip to Decorah to embrace all things Norske. And we also visited Burr Oak so I could visit the lesser-known Laura Ingalls Wilder site. I've also been camping at Pikes Peak State Park, along the Mississippi River, which is a must-see destination during the fall. But my recent visit to Honey Creek State Park Resort was my first true adventure into Southern Iowa. … [Read more...]

Kailua Beach: Best Beach on Oahu

While visiting Oahu we were blessed to be able to stay with family in Kailua. Staying in a home in a residential part of the island made our Hawaii experience so much more authentic and relaxed. We did visit the bustle of Waikiki Beach {I’ll highlight that part of the trip in a different post}, but I don’t recommend staying in that area. Not surprisingly Waikiki Beach is the tourist part of Hawaii. Instead everyday we were able to visit the much more local Kailua Beach with a short ten-minute walk. Prior to my trip to Hawaii I had been swimming in the ocean once in San Diego. I … [Read more...]

Likeke Falls Hike with Young Kids

I had grand visions of sharing in succession all of the sights from our Hawaii trip in April 2015. I started out strong with this Favorite Moments post and even showcased the beautiful Byodo-In Temple.  And then that's where my posts ended. Nevertheless, I'm back this week to continue sharing the sights of Oahu. Our first day on the island included the amazing visit to Byodo-In Temple and continued with an easy hike along the Old Pali Road to Likeke Falls. With my brother-in-law as our guide he started to educate us on part of the local history related to our hike. The Old Pali Road … [Read more...]

Overview of Epcot from a Minnesota Perspective

I received tickets in exchange for this post, however all opinions are my own. This April my family made the trek to Florida for the traditional Disney World experience. My boys were the perfect age for this sort of adventure at 11, 8, and 6 years old. We had previously visited Disneyland a number of years ago, but this was our first time at the Florida half of the Disney phenomenon.  First on our list of places to explore was Epcot. Ever since I was a kid I looked forward to visiting this destination that features countries from around the world. My love of geography and … [Read more...]

Best 5 Things to Do at Legoland, Florida

I received complimentary tickets in exchange for this post, all opinions are my own.  A couple of weeks ago our family made the quintessential spring break visit to Florida. Our agenda included theme parks, sun, palm trees, outdoor swimming pools- all the things that Minnesota doesn't have in April. High on my boys priority list of places to visit was Legoland, Florida. Like any boy mom I feel as though Legos have taken over my home at any given moment. It's not surprising that a theme park dedicated to this toy would be a must-see.  Based upon our experience I've … [Read more...]
