My husband has fond memories of when a Dunkin’ Donuts opened in the town he grew up. The store was this almost magical place where his parents could get a cup of good coffee and he could pick out a tasty doughnut treat. I can still hear the excitement in his voice describing the happy memories associated with Dunkin’ Donuts. We don’t currently live anywhere near one of these popular stores, but nonetheless we CAN still enjoy the best of both treats with Bakery Flavor Dunked In coffee varieties. Yes, you read that correctly. It’s bakery doughnut goodness flavored into delicious coffee.
Obviously, children will not be impressed:) You’ll still have to make a run to your local Dunkin’ Donuts for pastry goodies, but for adults- this is a natural and delicious combination. To soften the disappointment my children realized upon discovering these delicious looking bags actually contained nothing enticing for them, I made a Moist Chocolate Cake with the Chocolate flavor variety. Needless to say, they approved. This is the only way they can consume coffee and they are eager to do so. For the adults? I’ll take both the cake and a cup of coffee, please:)
What I especially love about this cake is that it doesn’t have frosting. Cake with frosting is overly sweet for me. I prefer a moist cake with a light powdered sugar frosting. And this cake doesn’t seem to dry out- at all. I don’t entirely get it, it could be the coffee or the buttermilk, but whatever it is, it clearly works. I adapted this recipe from an ancient Taste of Home magazine, but originally the recipe call for a bundt pan. However, since we are in the process of moving my bundt pan is already packed away, so instead I used a 9 x 11 glass baking dish. Success! The cake was equally as tasty and delicious. Of course, it seemed like a no brainer to use the Chocolate flavored coffee, but I can’t deny I was tempted by the Caramel and Old Fashion Donut varieties. Honestly, I don’t think you can make a wrong decision when it comes to selecting any of these coffees. All of the flavors were a hit, though as far as actually drinking for coffee the Jelly Donut was my personal favorite.
- 2 cups sugar, 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour, 3/4 cup caking cocoa, 2 teaspoons baking soda, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1 teaspoon salt, 2 eggs, 1 cup strong brewed Dunkin' Donuts coffee, 1 cup buttermilk, 1/2 cup vegetable oil, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1 tablespoon powdered sugar
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the first six ingredients. Add eggs, coffee, buttermilk, oil and vanilla; stir until combined. (Batter will be thin.) Pour into a greased 9 x 11 pan.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes. Dust with powdered sugar.
Most people just want to drink delicious coffee. It’s fuel to start the day! This is true for my husband and I as well, but with the Bakery Flavor Dunked In varieties my husband also gets an extra pleasant trip down memory lane.
