Nana, my husband, and I recently had the chance to view the newly released on DVD movie- The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. As I previously mentioned, I knew the movie-inspired gift basket we received would provide some drama. Having visited London, England so years ago, my husband and Nana both became fans of Branston Pickles. It’s pickle spread served on bread with Swiss cheese. I don’t understand the allure. Perhaps I could never be British,I find it disgusting. But as you can see Nana and my husband, clearly think it is worthwhile. I let them fight it out…..
As I mentioned before, I thought the movie looked good. But what I didn’t mention was that I was also worried that the movie would be boring. Famous, well respected actors in a character driven movie can either be captivating or worthy of a snooze. I was pleased to discover The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel to be a truly worthwhile film. It is the best movie I’ve seen in some time actually.
Judi Dench is amazing. She always is, isn’t she? She seems like such a wise and gentle person. Her performance is always strong and entirely convincing. and this is certainly true in this movie.
Here is my basic run down of the gist of the movie. Dev Patel (from Slumdog Millionaire), plays Sonny- a young Indian man attempting to create a successful retirement resort in India for British citizens. His ideas are big, but he lacks the necessary organizational skills to make his dream a reality. Regardless, he manages to lure seven various British citizens to his resort, each with their assorted story and problems. We are given a brief snippet of their lives as the story unfolds. The stories are well written, but it is the acting that truly makes this movie so powerful. The cast is spectacular. And just as I hoped the movie left me feeling uplifted and thoughtful- the best combination.
I thought the gift basket was a fun way to celebrate the movie, but it wasn’t until I actually saw the movie that I understood the funny story behind many of the items such as these Hobnob’s. (They tasted great by the way-they are a chocolate biscuit).
If you are looking for a well performed delightful story, I highly recommend viewing The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. It is currently available for purchase at Amazon. My husband, Nana, and I all enjoyed it. Obviously, this sort of agreement does not happen on a frequent basis:)
