Why Choose Nontoxic Cleaning Products?

While there are many effective household cleaning products available in your local supermarket or discount store, you may see some surprising ingredients if you read the label closely.

Many of these products contain harmful chemicals such as chlorine bleach, ammonia, petrochemicals, and VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds). It is risky to have these chemicals in your home in the case of accidental ingestion or physical contact. Breathing the fumes of some chemicals, especially over time, can be damaging to your health. In addition, small amounts of residual product can be left on surfaces or in the air following cleaning, adversely affecting your home’s air quality.

Important reasons to consider using nontoxic cleaning products such as those available from Household Traditions:

  • Protect children and pets from accidental poisoning
  • Protect yourself (or the primary cleaner of the house) from contact with these ingredients
  • Protect your home’s indoor air quality

It is important to properly dispose of any leftover toxic cleaning products after switching to nontoxic. Improper disposal, such as pouring them down the drain, on the ground outside, into storm sewers, or throwing them out in the trash can pollute the environment and pose a threat to human health. Many communities across the country offer options for safely disposing of toxic cleaning products, known also as “household hazardous waste.” Check with your local environmental, health, or solid waste agency for information.

The EPA suggests the following options for disposing of your toxic cleaning products:

  • See if your community has a facility that collects household hazardous waste year-round.
  • Check if there are designated days in your area for collecting solid waste at a central location.
  • You may be able to drop off certain products at local businesses for recycling or proper disposal.
  • Always read product labels for proper disposal instructions.

For more information on disposing household hazardous waste, visit the EPA’s website.

The reason I chose to review this All-Purpose Cleaner is that my 19 month old daughter has very sensitive skin and constantly has outbreaks of eczema.  I only use “free and clear” products such as soaps and lotions on her skin.  And I only use detergents and fabric softeners that are also free of additional additives.  I have been looking for a bathroom cleaner that is not so strong and potentially harsh on her skin.  The toxic smell that permeates the bathroom when you use most cleaners is very horrible.  I personally don’t even like cleaning the bathroom (who does?) and the main reason is the toxic products.  I am stuck in that small room with such strong odors and I certainly don’t want my kids around,  so I keep the door closed, of course ingesting more of the toxic fumes myself.

First I used this product on my daughter’s booster chair as it had a lot of dried food on it.  I had softball the other night so I wasn’t around for supper and the booster was wiped down, but not scrubbed.  Needless to say there was dried yogurt on the arm of the booster.  I did not take a picture of this as I was a little embarrassed to show this!  But I first tried a wet dishrag and that didn’t quite cut it.  I then tried spraying the All Purpose Cleaner on the arms and let it sit for a minute, then wiped it with the same wet cloth.  It came off very easily!

My next task with this product was the tub my kids use for baths.  We had a particularily dirty day playing outside and somehow my kids got dirt all over their hands so into the bath they went.  When they got out of the bath the tub was pretty dirty.  When I clean my tub I do it after my kids bath so that they aren’t in the tub for at least 24 hours after I clean it.  I have been trying hard to avoid harsh chemicals on my kids skin, but as I mentioned previously especially my daughter.  I waited until the dirt was dry, as I wanted another good test of the cleaner.  Here is the ledge of my tub before I cleaned it with this product.

I sprayed the product on my tub and let it sit for a few minutes, then I took a wet dishrag and scrub pad and washed the surface.  The ledge only needed the dishrag to clean the area,  but the bottom of the tub, that has a no slip bottom, took the scrub pad to completely come clean. Here is an after shot!

I thought this product performed well.  The smell of the cleaner is a little different, but does not burn your nostrils when you use it!  I will be using this product again for cleaning and am going to try it on my vehicle next!

One lucky Mama Report reader will win their own bottle of All-Purpose Cleaner from Household Traditions!
