#HEXBUGHalloween Party- Every Little Boy’s Dream Come True!

Not familiar with HEXBUG products?  I must admit prior to my HEXBUG Halloween party, neither was I.  I had briefly check them out at my local Target store, but since my boys didn’t really understand what they were I just stayed clear of them.

Let me officially state that my boys have definitely “discovered” HEXBUGs now.

But still, what are they? And why do all the little boys go wild over them?

Three simple words.

robots. bugs. glows-in-the-dark.

Is there any doubt that boys will love them?

There is something ingrained in the male psyche that causes wide, excited eyes when those mere words are mentioned.  Can they truly all exist together in one ultimate toy?

Yep, HEXBUGs.

My husband knew about our HEXBUG party, but didn’t really pay any attention until it was time to put everything together.

It was then, that those three little words, plus one more drove him wild.

robot. bugs. glows-in-the-dark. zombie.

My husband was giddy.  I should have seen it coming.  He is a boy after all, albeit a larger one.

With Daddy in a tizzy my younger ones quickly followed suit.  This party had the potential to send my house into testosterone overload and it had not even started yet!

I must admit the set up looked amazing!  We fit one Glows in the Dark HEXBUG Nano Elevation Habitat Set with one Glows in the Dark HEXBUG Nano Habitat Set and then kept one Habitat Set by itself.  My husband assembled the pieces without much trouble.  The set up time was approximately 10 minutes.  The hardest part of the set up was taking the bugs out of their container.

The Nano bugs come in cylinder containers and can be a little tricky to get out.  I had to ultimately use a knife to push the top of the container.

Once removed of their packaging these “bugs” were free to do their thing.  What is it that they do?  They vibrate and move.  Simple.  However they move fairly smartly.  This would be the robot part.  And this is also the part that freaks me out.  They act like a real bug.  Have you ever seen a centipede crawl across the room? These bugs are similar.  I enjoyed watching the bugs, however I was not excited to hold the bugs. They are just a little too life like for me.

I along with everyone else was really impressed at how the bugs work at finding their way through the tunnels and paths of the habitat.  It is amazing how they can make something so small, so life like and smart.  It truly is impressive.  I detected a bit of disbelief radiating from my husband.  He was “put out” that they didn’t have these kind of things when he was a kid.

So what do you “do” with the bugs?  Basically watching them in their habitat is the idea.  You can change their direction and path by building the habitat in a different formation and by changing the little gates that allow them access to different areas.

As you can see in the picture above and below even littler children are amazed by them.

Next it was time to try the Glow in the Dark portion.  That really is that best part of something, isn’t it?  Take any object and tag “Glows in the Dark” at the end and you immediately have a winner.  At sheet of paper that glows in the dark.  A glow in the dark paper clip.  I want to see them.  If it glows in the dark, I want to see it.  Is this basic human nature or is it just me?  Hmmm…..

We moved the set around to a couple of different places to test the glowing portion.  It turned out that my bedroom closet worked best. We had to take turns being inside, however as there isn’t much room!

So how is the glow in the dark portion?  Awesome!  It really is cool.  Here is a short video I took.  The quality isn’t the greatest, but it gives you a small feel for what it is like.  There isn’t a good way to catch this using a regular old camera.

The bugs need to be in light for sometime to make them glow really well.  But they definitely glow.

Perhaps this experience will help me overcome my fear of bugs……or maybe not.  But regardless my boys are in “seventh heaven”!
