More Than Just a Brother

Like any mom, I cherish all those magical moments in my son’s lives. All those firsts that are exciting and special.  The first smile, laugh, crawl, and steps.  The first day at school and the first lost tooth.

But as an only child it is the moment when my second son was born, instantly creating brothers, that arguably means the most to me.  Watching their relationship develop has been hilarious, confusing, heartbreaking, and one of the sweetest things I’ve ever seen.  All of the aspects of having a sibling are new to me.   The idea that you can be horribly annoyed with them at one minute and having the best time together a moment later.  How they can push your buttons like no one else.  And how they can be your best friend.

There is a camaraderie and togetherness in siblings that I have never experienced.  I can only watch in amazement.   Part parent, part best friend, part enemy, and everything else in between.

They can help feed you.

They are great for being cuddly and cozy with.

Someone to play with.

Love hurts, I guess…..

And while I know I can’t be with them on their entire journey, I cherish those magical moments I do have.

And clearly since two is so wonderful, why not three?

Another friend to get cozy with.

Another reason to fight.

Another person to share in the holiday fun.

I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to express to my boys how blessed they are to have each other.  It is easy to take for granted that which you have always had.

Yes, they drive me crazy.  Yes, they fight.  They scream.  They punch.  I foresee a good fistfight in a couple of years…..but I see tenderness, kindness, love, and an ever lasting bond.  Being a part of that experience is what gets me out of bed every morning and gives meaning to everything in my world.   For me, this is as good as it gets.

This post was inspired by the film The Odd Life of Timothy Green which is in theaters August 15th. This movie is storytelling at its best and a must see for every parent.

I saw this film as part of my Avengers Tribeca Film Festival weekend with Disney, however all opinions expressed are my own.
