Oz The Great and Powerful Movie Review! #DisneyOzEvent #DisneyOz

I find it amazing that it has taken so long for another movie to be made from one of L. Frank Baum’s books.   Of course, The Wizard of Oz is amazing and timeless.  Potentially tapping into that story line is a daunting task for a director or actor.  I was delighted and thrilled that Sam Raimi created this magical world once again for the film Oz The Great and Powerful.  I think people’s first assumption will be to compare The Wizard of Oz and Oz The Great and Powerful.  I find this comparison to be unfair and not relevant.   The Wizard of Oz was created in 1939 and was arguably the best movie made during that time period.  Generations of movie goers love this film and have watched it since childhood (me included).  And while Oz The Great and Powerful is set in the same places, it is a movie experience within itself.

So if the two movies should not be compared, than what are my thoughts on Oz The Great and Powerful?  I have included below my five favorite aspects of the film:)  This is why you should see this movie in theaters NOW!

1.  Revisiting The Land of Oz– since I am so familiar with the Land of Oz, thanks to The Wizard of Oz, I had such a fun time seeing familiar images and characters in in a new way.  It’s like visiting an old friend you haven’t seen in a long time.  They are a bit different, but the core of who they are is the same.  From dull and dirty Kansas, to the beautiful and colorful Land of Oz, Raimi clearly worked his magic on those solid core elements of the film that we all love.   Throughout the movie I was curious as to the ending, since I know exactly how everything needs to be for the beginning of The Wizard of Oz.  Watching the story unfold was captivating and fun.

2.  The Witches I can’t entirely explain my reasoning, but I bet I’m not alone in my desire to see the witches.  Yes, Oz is the main character, but the witches are the juicy, evil, good, and captivating part.  I won’t spoil the movie for you.  I won’t reveal within this review who the Wicked Witch of the West is, but watching this story line unfold within the movie is awesome!  Of course, this mystery is only relevant to those of us who haven’t read the books.  Sometimes it’s good to be ignorant on a subject matter:)  Well, at least it makes for a bit more of a surprise in this film.

3.  The Costumes– One glimpse of Rachel Weisz as Evanora in that lovely emerald gown made me realize I had to see this film just for the costumes alone. I love elaborate, detailed dresses.  Traditionally my favorite films are period pieces with clothing detailing another time and place.  Oz The Great and Powerful does not disappoint.  I even had the exciting opportunity to see some of the dresses first hand at our press junket.  Yes, the dresses are teeny, tiny.  I’m sure only my left leg would fit into them:)

4.  The Relationships– The best movies have powerful and touching relationships.  The essence of life is our interactions with others and I love films that feature unique bonds.  The flying monkey- Finley and the delicate doll- China Girl provide a touching sense of humanity, ironic since neither is human:)  Oz needs trusted companions on this journey.  Of course, he has a relationship with some of the witches, but it is his dutiful Finley and sassy China Girl that provide comic relief and a lasting friendships.

5.  A Fantastical Scenes– Some movies are best seen in the comfort of your own home.  I’m sure you know what I’m talking about.  Those movies that are not particularly visually appealing, they might have a great story, but the experience is as good at home as it is in the movie theater.   This situation is not the case with Oz The Great and Powerful.  I’m betting  you could probably figure this fact out from the trailer alone.   But this movie is best scene in a movie theater.  The created world of the Land of Oz is colorful and beautiful.  Yes, of course it would look good at home on your TV, but I can confirm it looks even better on a large theater screen.

So what are you waiting for?!  Oz The Great and Powerful makes for a great afternoon movie experience for children ages 8+.   If your world is anything like mine, you are immersed in large quantities of snow.   Try to forget about winter for at least a couple of hours and grab a buddy for some popcorn and an amazing movie this weekend.  That’s where my family will be this Sunday:)

Oz The Great and Powerful is in theaters NOW

Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved wizard character. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great wizard but into a better man as well.

My trip to the #DisneyOzEvent was funded entirely by Disney, however all opinions are my own.
