The concept of DVD read-along stories was immediately appealing to me for my nearly 5-year-old new reader. Entertainment plus reading practice sounded like a product that would make us both happy.
The DVD case is brightly-colored and well-illustrated, making it attractive for kids and parents alike. The illustrations in the stories are equally charming, though the animation seems rather low-tech and even a bit primitive, with still images that rock back and forth at times. The songs feature animation with more movement. My favorite image in the musical numbers is the shot of the back end of the pigs with their tails wagging in “The Three Little Pigs” song – very cute and humorous.
The DVD includes four classic stories, “The Three Little Pigs,” “The Ugly Duckling,” “Jack and the Beanstalk,” and The Little Red Hen.” I appreciate the selection of these valuable tales and how the moral lesson in each is actually spelled out by a character at the end of each story. Following each story is a rock song about its plot. The musical quality is high, and the fun beat seems appealing for kids.
As each story is narrated in the video, the words being spoken are displayed along the bottom of the screen, with highlighting following the current word. The songs include a display of the lyrics as well, with a dot indicating the current word being sung. I thought this was a genius idea and a great tool for young readers. At first, the pacing of the words was too fast for my 4-year-old, but he indicated he could follow it better after additional viewings.
Overall, the price at nearly $20 seemed a bit steep however using coupons code JQ7711 for 25% off makes the price a bit more reasonable. I really appreciated this product and would highly recommend it to parents of young readers.
Students enjoy reading along with four classic tales written at a second-grade level. Fun, simple animation provides entertainment, but does not distract young learners from following along with the words on screen. After each story, students are rewarded by reading and singing a cool, rockin’ song that reviews the story and presents more challenging words.
