Soccer World Spain Review

Summary:

Ethan continues his around the world adventures using soccer as a conduit for learning. This time he meets up with his young friend Javier in Spain, as they explore the country that proudly won the 2010 FIFA World Cup. From watching an amazing game between world class rivals Real Madrid and FC Barcelona to exploring island volcanic landscapes to witnessing the many fiestas that are celebrated there, Ethan and readers experience the real Spain and its multicultural history. Activities generated from each chapter include learning a phrase in each of the different languages that Spain recognizes, making a sand-drip sand castle to understand surface tension, and creating a time capsule unique to a family’s culture and era.

As in all Soccer World adventures, readers will have the opportunity to research a “give back” project in Spain and, through their efforts, make a difference in this wonderful country.

I was still watching Survivor when Ethan Zohn won.  He was an immediate favorite as he actually had an ethical plan to win the game.  There have been so many Survivor seasons now, I’m not even sure which one they are currently on.  Ethan was definitely one of my favorite contestants and I was shocked when I found out that he had cancer.  Luckily, (I believe) his cancer is in remission and he is continuing to spread his love of soccer throughout the world.  Zohn is actually using his celebrity and money from Survivor to perform good deeds.

We love soccer at my house.  My husband used to play in high school and my oldest son definitely has a natural talent and affinity for the game.  With three boys in the house,  I predict we will be attending many soccer games in the future.  My three year old will get his first chance this summer.  He can’t wait.

I have had the pleasure of reviewing several books from Nomad Press and I continue to be impressed by the quality of these selections.   Soccer World Spain takes the sport of soccer (football, for other countries of course) and explains the sport within the context of that country.  This means that not only is the book about soccer, but it is also all about Spain.  This is the third book in the series- other countries being featured include South Africa and Mexico.   I love how the book takes new words and highlights them (as you can see in the picture).  Rather than having simple, plain text, the book has many different sections and eye catching text and pictures.

And like almost all Nomad Press books this one has hands on activities.  Each chapter contains a project that can add a additional dimension of learning.  This book would be great for homeschooling or would be a great resource for teachers.

If your kids love soccer this is a great way to expose them to other cultures!

Soccer World Spain is available at Amazon.com for $11.21
