I had heard of the Sodastream Fountain Jet before, but I was a little unsure of exactly what it was.  The premise is very simple.  Make your own soda or carbonated water from home.  Stop purchasing pop and instead use reusable bottles to make your own soda.  The system comes with the fountain jet system and  two reusable bottles.  Then there is the matter of flavors.  There are many different kinds of flavors available.  Cherry Cola, Lemon-Lime, Cola, Root Beer, Orange, Grape, Diet Flavors…..the list is quite extensive.

I assumed my husband would make our first soda and teach me.  I really dislike reading directions.  I have officially named the job my husbands.  A couple of days past and my husband was too busy at work to give it a try so it became apparent I would need to step up.  I was ready for confusion.  I was ready for mistakes.  I was truly surprised at how easy it was.  Following the directions and looking at the pictures I was able to easily make my first root beer.  Either it is really simple to do or I’m just smart.  You decide:) I was also really surprised to find that it does not use electricity.  I falsely assumed it would require a plug-in, but it is completely sell sufficient.

My kids don’t normally get to drink pop, but they were excited to see the Sodastream in motion and so they were able to sample the root beer.  They loved it, of course.  I am a big fan of root beer and I’m afraid this didn’t measure up to the rest.  I believe I will have to adjust the syrup levels and then perhaps create a better tasting root beer.

My next attempt was at Ginger Ale and I’m pleased to state that I had better luck with this flavor.  It is unlike any other ginger ale’s I’ve tasted, but once again the kids loved it.  Needless to say they think the Soda Stream is the best thing ever.

Okay time for my confession.  I like soda.  It is a treat for me.  I like the taste of regular old soda- no diet stuff for me.  I’m not sure that I can convert to the Sodastream.  The taste is different.  I like the idea of Sodastream.  It is better for the environment,  it is better for my pocket book, it is better for my health, but I just don’t know if I can do it.  The kids love it.  And perhaps that is the key.  If you are new to soda or not stuck on a particular type then this will be wonderful for you.  However if  love your particular brand I believe it will be hard to switch.

We do like to drink carbonated water at my house and I believe this is were the Sodastream Fountain Jet will be really most effective in our lives.  Carbonated water is ridiculously expensive so I can see where using the Fountain Jet would be beneficial to our pocketbooks.

Overall I believe the Sodastream Fountain Jet has a lot of potential.  It is easy to use, has a wide variety of flavors,  good for the environment, cost effective, and is healthier than drinking normal soda (no high fructose corn syrup).  I am going to continue to try new flavors and work on adjusting the level of flavoring to suit my tastes.

I was provided a Soda Stream Fountain Jet and flavors for review, all opinions are my own.
