My boys love SpongeBob SquarePants.  According to a recent study it could be causing them to perform at a lower level.  My response- whatever!  If you are not familiar with the study read about it here.  First of all your child should not be watching a lot of TV.  Its that simple.  My eldest son (7 yrs) doesn’t watch TV during the school week (only on the weekends), my four year old watches an hour a day, and my almost two year doesn’t watch TV at all.

My boys also watch a wide selection of TV.  They enjoy SpongeBob SquarePants, but they also enjoy many other shows.  They are constantly “mixing it up”.  My four year old doesn’t watch something twice during the week.  This new DVD (it’s a winner!) is mixed into their random rotation and they ENJOY it.

Now let me get on my soapbox.  I wish some of these studies would take a look at what certain reality shows are doing to the adult population.  Our society seems to be obsessed with The Real Housewives, Jersey Shore, and many more different “reality” shows.  Yes, that is “reality” with a quotation mark, you know what I mean.  Their version of reality is definitely distorted.  It is okay, just like anything, to watch these shows occasionally.  I’m not meaning to imply they are completely worthless, okay except maybe Jersey Shore.  You can learn something from almost anything.  I think the key words that are missing from the study is moderation and variety.

Will my children continue to watch SpongeBob SquarePants?  You bet.  It’s a funny show that they enjoy, it really is as simple as that.

Spongebob’s Runaway Roadtrip is available for pre-order from Amazon for $13.99 and will be available for purchase at stores nationwide on September 20th, 2011.
