As you’ve probably notice from other posts, I am a big fan of the new movie The Odd Life of Timothy Green. Back in April when I was in NYC for The Avengers Tribeca Film Festival closing night screening, I had the opportunity to be one of first few people to see the movie. As soon as the film started, I was struck with the feeling that this would be a movie to remember- a classic. It’s almost hard to explain. When a story is so powerful and meaningful, it alters your reality and makes the world look differently- at least for a while.
Writer/director Peter Hedges (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape & Dan in Real Life) kindly spent a few minutes before and after the movie chatting with me and my fellow mommy bloggers. Mr. Hedges could be the most eloquent person I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to. He had all of us crying before we even saw the movie (in a good way). He speaks with such intensity and sincerity. He is truly a master storyteller. Some people on this Earth have a gentle guiding spirit and attempt to bring some of that joy to others- this is Peter Hedges.
But back to the movie:) The Odd Life of Timothy Green tells the story of …..Timothy Green. Obviously:) If you’ve seen the preview you’ve probably figured out there are supernatural elements to the story. The presence of Timothy Green certainly isn’t natural. I prefer realistic stories, so I was surprised that this supernatural element to the story didn’t bother me. Perhaps it is because it is obvious that this movie is symbolic. It isn’t meant to be taken literally. Instead it is the deeper meanings that resonate and Timothy Green is merely a creative way to tap into the parent/child relationship that all of us experience.
The film is superbly acted by Jennifer Garner, Joel Edgerton, and CJ Adams. You will feel their joy and pain, as if it were your own. I particularly love the scenes when Cindy Green (Jennifer Garner) is able to show up her shallow and seemingly perfect sister.
After I saw the movie and raved about it, my husband immediately wanted to know what the story was all about. He was looking for a concise, to the point answer. I couldn’t exactly answer him, as you have to experience the movie for yourself. He then presumed there was a twist to the story and scoured the internet trying to find this mystery element. He is the type of person who tries to figure out the movie ahead of time, can you tell?:)
But there is no great mystery to figure out.
The Odd Life of Timothy Green is an experience. It is a feeling.
It is the story of almost every parent.
When my girlfriends ask me about the movie I say, YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS.
And that is my advice. See the movie. Experience it for yourself. The Odd Life of Timothy Green is inspiring. In this world full of confusion, hate, violence, and lots of ugliness- Timothy Green reminds you to celebrate the uniqueness and goodness of everyone around you.
Check out the trailer below for a quick peek, though I must admit the trailer doesn’t even begin to tap into the powerful nature of this film.
The Odd Life of Timothy Green is in theaters August 15th!
I attended an advanced free screening for the above mentioned movie, all opinions expressed are my own.
