Fruits & Veggies More Matters/Country Crock MyPlate Makeover Challenge (Win $100 Grocery Gift Card)


Did you know the USDA has replaced the food pyramid with a plate diagram to improve the understanding of proportions of each food group for healthy eating?  The food pyramid has been around for ages, but isn’t an entirely accurate way to show food proportions.  The new “plate” guidelines look like this.

Here is some additional information regarding the changes courtesy of Fruits & Veggies More Matters.

    • Grains & Protein. Grains and protein each represent less than one quarter of the plate. While the protein group was once known as the meat group, over time it has transitioned to incorporate other protein-rich foods such as fish, shellfish, poultry, eggs, beans, peas, nuts, and seeds.
    • Dairy. The dairy group has been moved to a circle next to the plate and defined as fat-free or low-fat milk or yogurt.
    • Fruits & Vegetables. The biggest star of the MyPlate debut is fruits and vegetables, winning half the available real estate on the plate. The plate stresses the key concept of filling half your plate with fruits and vegetables (that doesn’t mean potato chips!).

Overall, the new plate image encourages a more plant-based diet.

Here is a plate we received to help our children learn about healthy portions courtesy of Country Crock.   We need to do a better job of making our plates and our children’s look like this.  My eldest son could eat an entire plate of bread!  My children are good fruit eaters, but only my middle son (age 4) is a happy carrot eater.  The other vegetables they eat merely because they have to, but I guess that is better than nothing!

Country Crock wants to show people how easy it can be to fill half your plate with veggies.  With 70% less saturated fat and 30% fewer calories than butter, Country Crock is the perfect topping for your veggie dishes.

Recipe Cost for 4 People: $9.54 ($2.38/serving)*
Preparation Time: 30 minutes
  • 4 boneless chicken breasts (about 1 pound)
  • 2 tbsp garlic and herb blend (like Mrs. Dash)
  • 2 tbsp Country Crock® Spread, divided
  • ½ cup water
  • 4 cups fresh broccoli florets
  • 2 oranges, sliced
Coat chicken breasts with herb blend. Melt 1 tbsp Country Crock® Spread over medium heat in a 12″ skillet (with lid – for cooking broccoli). Add the coated chicken and brown on both sides. Reduce heat slightly, and cook chicken until done, turning a couple times. Remove chicken from skillet; add water and broccoli to skillet, cover with lid. Bring to boil, reduce heat, cover, and simmer about 3 minutes until broccoli is slightly tender, yet still bright green. For each individual plate, place 1 chicken breast on plate and garnish with orange slices. Mound broccoli next to chicken and dab with remaining Country Crock® Spread.

Complete this Healthy Plate: Serve with whole wheat roll (add a dab of Country Crock® Spread) and an 8 oz glass of nonfat milk.
