This Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil is a truly unrefined coconut oil. It is made on Mt. Banahaw and surrounding areas from organic coconuts. The coconuts are used fresh (within 24-48 hours of harvest) from small family farms on Mt. Banahaw and other rural places in Quezon Province, the coconut capital of the Philippines. Only the highest quality coconuts are hand-picked from each harvest. The volcanic soil of Mt. Banahaw makes these organic coconuts some of the most nutritionally rich coconuts in the world! Testing done in independent laboratories reveals higher levels of phenolic antioxidants than other coconut oils. The fresh coconut meat is shredded (wet milled), and then cold-pressed using the water from inside the coconuts to make coconut milk. The milk is then allowed to sit for about half a day, while the oil naturally separates from the heavier water. The oil is then filtered from the curds (coconut solids). No chemical or high-heat treatment is used, and this oil contains no trans fatty acids. We do NOT mass produce this oil. It is made by families who are coconut farmers using old-fashioned traditional methods that have been used in the Philippines for hundreds of years. Our coconut trees and family producers are certified organic according to strict USDA standards. The families who produce the oil are also trained according to GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) standards and re-certified each year. This high-grade Virgin Coconut Oil has a long shelf life due to the high antioxidant properties. The Gold Label Standard is our highest standard for Virgin Coconut Oil.
I have been hearing about the benefits of coconut oil for quite a while. Somehow I just couldn’t bring myself to use it. I even had a jar in my cupboard for months that Nana had received as a gift, but I still didn’t use it. Actually that is not entirely true. I used it in my hair to add shine. I didn’t notice any results, but boy was it messy! I am an avid olive oil user and making the switch to coconut oil was going to take a push. The needed push came in the form of my Tropical Traditions review. I received the Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil, the best of the best. This was definitely the right oil to take my first attempt at using coconut oil.
Next, I needed to find a recipe to make. I was hesitant to use a recipe I currently make with olive oil and replace it with coconut oil. I did not believe this would be the best way to begin my experience. I think it is best to stick with known results in the beginning and then add versions with experience. I turned to the recipes available at the Tropical Traditions website titled, Free Coconut Recipe blog. The selection was amazing. I had a hard time narrowing down the field of possible recipes. First I decided on a Penne Pasta Salad Coconut Oil recipe. I needed a salad to serve at my son’s birthday party so I decided to give it a try. The recipe was super easy to make and used a variety of fresh peppers. Here is the end result.
This salad was a great healthy alternative to many summer salads. The recipe calls for Parmesan and coconut flakes sprinkled on top. I was curious to see how the coconut flakes tasted on the salad and I must say they tasted great. The flakes and coconut oil does had a slight coconut taste to the salad. I was surprised that the coconut oil does have a coconut taste since I don’t think of olive oil tasting like olives, but we like coconut at our house.
Next I wanted to tackle an entree. I decided upon Thai Coconut Curry Shrimp. The title itself sounds delicious! My family loves Thai food so I knew this dish had a great chance of being a success. And of course it was completely a winner. Nana and my husband loved it and there weren’t even any leftovers! This recipe, just like the salad was easy to make. I returned home late and had to prepare supper in a jiffy and this recipe was ready in no time. I was surprised it went so smoothly considering it was the first time I made it and I was in a hurry. Sometimes that can be a recipe for disaster. Using coconut oil is just like using olive oil, vegetable oil, or canola oil. There are no special instructions or procedures. The difference? Coconut oil is good fat. No trans fats or hydrogenated oils, instead only organic healthy oil from coconuts. Delicious! Check out more recipes using coconut oil here.
Overall I was impressed with my Tropical Traditions coconut oil. I look forward to using it in other recipes and experimenting with it further.
