Fire safety is obviously very important. Yet it is all too easy to forget to maintain the simple devices we need to keep pour families safe. Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors provide life saving warnings to alert your family in an emergency. When was the last time you checked the batteries in these devices? I’m speculating that it has been a while. I know that my own family does not always remember to to check that the alarms are in working order.
As we take the time to turn the clocks back an hour (November 6) it is the perfect time to change the batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) are asking parents to take a vital step to keep their kids safe at home – Change Your Clock Change Your Battery®. It is such a simple thing to do and could potentially save your life in a fire emergency.
Thirty-eight percent of fatal fire injuries occur in homes without working smoke alarms, while 24 percent occur in homes in which at least one smoke alarm is present but fails to operate. (Statistics provided by the National Fire Prevention Association)
Throughout October, Energizer is inviting parents across the country to join the Energizer Bunny® Brigade on Facebook (www.facebook.com/
“For 23 years, Energizer, the IAFC and more than 6,200 fire departments have partnered to educate communities on the importance of home fire safety and having working smoke alarms,” said Michelle Atkinson, Vice President of Marketing for Energizer North America. “By having parents and families actively pledge to change the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, we are hoping they will share the information with their network of friends and hopefully help other families do this simple and life-saving task- now that’s positivenergy™”
Two lucky Mama Report reader will win a smoke alarm equipped with Energizer batteries!

I’m ashamed to say that I took the batteries out of my smoke detector about 11 years ago because it kept going off when I was cooking. I wonder what that says about my cooking? Anyway, I finally repainted the hall where it was, and the screws in the ceiling reminded me that I really did need a smoke detector. So I bought a combo smoke/carbon monoxide detector about 2 weeks ago and just installed it. Now I need another one for the other end of the house.
