Father’s Day Gift Idea 2011- Energizer Qi Inductive Charger Review

Energizer Qi Inductive Charger

With the Energizer® Inductive Charger you can easily charge your smartphone with a Qi sleeve or Qi door, by simply placing it on the charging mat.

Inductive charging is the next generation of intelligent charging. By using an electromagnetic field to transfer energy, charging pads are able to intelligently communicate back and forth with the devices they’re charging.

First, a transmitter awaits a signal from a receiver that it needs power. When it detects a receiver, the transmitter sends electricity through a transmitting coil, creating an electromagnetic field with a specific frequency. The receiving coil, designed to accept energy at that frequency, then turns that energy into something we all need, more battery life. When the receiver’s battery is full, the receiving coil tells the transmitter to stop sending energy, effectively telling the transmitter to standby. Devices talking intelligently to one another over beams of energy may not be flying cars, but it’s still pretty futuristic.

Just as inductive charging is the first generation of intelligent charging, Qi is the next generation. Before Qi, not all transmitters and receivers were designed to work together. They didn’t all speak the same language. This is why the Wireless Power Consortium came together and made Qi the universal standard for inductive charging. Now, with Qi Inductive Charging, all Qi-enabled devices that need up to 5 watts of power have coils that transmit and receive the same frequency. So now and in the future, any Qi-enabled device will work with any Qi charger.

That’s the power of Qi. That’s charging into the future.

My husband (Father Geek) is the one with an iPhone so here is his review of the Energizer Qi Inductive Charger.  This techie tool would make a great Father’s Day gift this June.  You can find the Qi at Target, Home Depot, Best Buy, and Amazon.

If you are like me, you have a lot of electronic devices that either recharge by plunging into the wall or require endless gobs of batteries. We can reduce the number of batteries we buy in bulk by purchasing a very small number of rechargeable batteries. Smart, but we are still left with a drawer full of cables that we use to recharge our other devices like phones, MP3 players, and hand-held video game consoles. Clearly, we still have a mess on our hands.

But fear not over burdened friend of mine! Energizer has developed and released the very thing we are in desperate need of! The Energizer Inductive Charger!

Before we go into detail about the charger, let’s make sure we have our geek facts straight. Specifically, understanding inductive charging. If you are not familiar with it, the simplest way of explaining it is pretending your left hand is power and your right hand is your electronic device of choice. Now, put your hands together. What do you have? You have a connection! The power from your left hand flows into the device of your right hand. Or, to put it another way, the electricity flows into the device!

Now separate your hands. Do you see any cables connecting the two? NO! And yet, the device is still charged! This is inductive charging. The process is done wirelessly over a very short range. No metal is needed so any surface will do. You could have an inductive charger surface made of plastics, wood, or even leather! Essentially, any conductive surface.

This is what Energizer has made and what I had the pleasure of testing. I own an iPhone 4 and am burdened like so many of you with cords. I have one in my car, one on my computer, and one by my coffee maker in the kitchen. That’s three cables, two of which are in the house. But I also have an MP3 player and a hand-held video game console! That’s two more cords. But, with the Energizer Inductive Charger, I can put some of those cords away.

The Energizer Inductive Charger is slim, trim, and does the trick. It can charge two electronic devices and has a USB port in the back for those devices that usually charge on your computer! Brilliant! All you need to do is plug the Energizer Inductive Charger into the wall and you are ready to charge your devices.

There are two small catches to this however, that must be discussed before you rush out to buy your own Energizer Inductive Charger. First, your device must be what is referred to as Qi (pronounced “chee”) enabled. Your device will have a Qi label on it or will state it is Qi enabled on the box or documentation. Second, if your device is not Qi enabled, you will need to purchase one of the many sleeves available for non-Qi enabled devices that will make it possible to charge your device with the the Energizer Inductive Charger. If your device connects to a USB port on your computer, you only need to plug one end of the USB cord to the back of the Energizer Inductive Charger and you are set.

My iPhone 4 is not Qi enabled which means I need a sleeve. The Energizer Inductive Sleeve was made specifically for the iPhone 4 and cradles and protects my iPhone like any of the iPhone cases available on the market today. However, unlike all those other cases, the Energizer Inductive Sleeve makes my iPhone Qi enabled. All I need to do is simply slide the iPhone into the sleeve and place it on the Energizer Inductive Charger and I can say good-bye to my power cords. The sleeve can stay on, too, as it is thick and sturdy, providing Qi enablement and protection as the same time.

There you have it! Energizer has made available to you an affordable and clutter-free solution for your electronic devices. Put those cords away and us the Energizer Inductive Charger to charge three different devices at a time! When they are charging, a soft blue light will shine. Once recharged, it turns off. So simple, my 3 year old can do it, and he does.

Perhaps best of all is the reduction of cords and the very safe technology that is inductive charging. With little children in my house, I am super sensitive to anything and everything that could possibly harm my children. Power cables can be a safety issue. I can now put them away and only use the Energizer Inductive Charger. Better yet, by doing so, I can rest easy knowing that my children will not hurt themselves with the cables or even the inductive charger because the inductive charger only turns on once it recognizes a QI enabled device. You can place your hand on the charger and it will not turn on. This means no shock or possibility of danger. BRILLIANT!

If you are looking for a better way to charge your devices, do take a look at the Energizer Inductive Charger and Sleeves for those devices that are not Qi enabled. Your life just got that much less cluttered!

I was provided the above mentioned product for review purposes, all opinions are my own.
