FlyOver America at the Mall of America & a MN Giveaway

I received tickets to experience this attraction, all opinions are my own.

FlyOver America CollageHiding within the walls of the Mall of America is a new attraction, FlyOver America. This flight simulator is unlike any other activity in the area, offering an aerial tour of the U.S. with wind, mist and even scents. My boys love simulator rides. They are not daredevils by nature when it comes to roller coasters and other amusement park rides. When we recently visited Florida their favorite rides were all simulator based, so I knew this local version was going to be a hit.

How the FlyAmerica works

The concept is quite simple. Three levels of secured riders experience the grandeur of the U.S. by “soaring” over the land. The immense half dome screen provides the visual experience while additional technology supplies the effects of midst, wind, and scent.  This ride is a mild level of adventure perfect for kids, my youngest is six years old. He greatly enjoyed the experience.

Happy Faces at FlyOver America

Given the sweltering humidity we seem to be experiencing in Minnesota this summer, FlyOver America is a welcomed destination to enjoy in the air-conditioned indoors. Providing glimpses of the U.S. from Maine to Hawaii I personally recommend visiting this site before the 4th of July. There is a subtle level of patriotism and nostalgia involved in the ride as participants are able to view iconic American landmarks and well as experience personal memories they might happen to have. For instance when Hawaii appeared on the screen there was no mistaking this distinct state. My boys were instantly excited to see their beloved islands on the big screen and I was immediately peppered with questions of “are we going to go back there?”. Hawaii holds a special place in their memories and anytime we tap into that previous experience it’s a special moment.

FlyOver America Locations in the US

Once the show is over everyone has a chance to uncover the larger stories behind the film. A map outlines the places visited in the film in case there were any places you couldn’t quite figure out. Additionally you’ll learn that the film was shot by a camera attached to a helicopter. While I was on the ride I assumed the video footage had been captured by drones. I was amazed to learn that a helicopter and crew visited some of these precarious destinations. Taking an entire year to cross the U.S. and film 50 hours of footage this task was no easy accomplishment. Make sure to ask the knowledgeable and friendly staff on site if you have additional questions about the process.

While on the ride there were moments when we dipped down close to the water. With the wind and midst I was almost sure my feet were about to get wet. I had to stop myself from almost instinctually pulling them up so as not to get wet.
