Snow Day, today at my house!  Needless to say the kids were thrilled.  We didn’t actually receive any snow, mind you.  But supposedly the roads are icy and there is a dense fog.  I’ll never know, as obviously we were committed to staying at home.  This situation lent itself perfectly to getting snugly and watching a movie.  Our choice- FRANKENWEENIE.

We have been excited to see this Tim Burton film for quite some time.  So I made some popcorn and we cuddled together to see this fun, macabre-like film.  Yes, we were still in our pajamas too!  Gotta love a day at home!

In typical Tim Burton style this movie is quirky creepy, characteristics my boys love.  This movie probably isn’t for every family.  If previous Tim Burton films such as A Nightmare Before Christmas seem too dark and odd to you, you probably won’t like this one.  That being said, my boys loved it.  Actually my eight year old stated and I quote, “In a strange way this movie is awesome”!

The movie begins quite simply with a boy and his dog.  Victor and Sparky are best friends.  Obviously, as you can probably already figure out Sparky is hit by a car and dies.  And just like in traditional Frankenstein style Victor is inspired by his science teacher to bring Sparky back to life.  The deeper meanings within this tale are touching.  Victor is miserable and sad without his beloved Sparky and simply just wants him back.  The emotion he feels might be a teaching tool for children who are experiencing a similar situation.  But it is at this point the movie set off in a separate direction.

Victor does indeed bring Sparky back to life, but then must hid him, in order not to reveal his amazing feat.  My boys were riveted.  Especially when Victor uses lightening and science to bring Sparky back to life.  Initially my boys thought they would be scared during some parts of this film, but they were not.  They were completely engrossed in this black and white world.

I don’t want to wreck the movie for you so I won’t go into the particulars anymore, but we loved the movie so much we even checked out the bonus material- something we rarely do.  In typical Disney animation style there are a bunch of extras that are shorter, but equally entertaining.
