What is the current state of your garage? Is it organized? Tidy? Clean? If so, good for you! But if it isn’t any of those things, I can completely relate. I’m a fairly organized person. I like to keep things tidy. But my garage is chaos. It is completely unmanageable. For my family the garage tends to be one of the places we “dump” things. Not really sure where it goes? Put it in the garage, has become our motto. There are a variety of toys, tools, and miscellaneous stuff. But amongst all the chaos is an obvious misuse of space. I have numerous items on the floor and on the shelf, but I don’t have anything on a huge portion of the wall.
Did you know today is National Clean Out Your Garage Day? Don’t worry if you didn’t know, I was not aware of this date until fairly recently. The idea is simple~ designate a day (it obviously doesn’t need to be today) to make your garage safe and prepared for the fall/winter season.
Check out these tips from The Lehigh Group to help you get your garage organized this season!
· Sort the Mess – Separate your items into categories. Then pitch, donate or sell items you don’t use. After deciding what stays, separate the garage into zones for storing each category of items, and then choose the most appropriate storage method.
· Go Vertical – Garages provide ample wall and ceiling space to easily convert for storage through use of hanging shelves, pegboards, storing rails and overhead systems. For example, The Lehigh Group makes a variety of Crawford®-brand flexible mesh storage organizers that hang on the wall and can hold up to 25 lbs. They are particularly suited to accommodate awkward or bulky items, from pet toys to work gloves and camping equipment.
· Securely Store Hazardous Items – Place toxic materials such as paint, paint thinner, weed and bug killers, fertilizer and gasoline in high cabinets or lockable tool chests out of children’s reach. Use well-supported shelves to store cleaning solutions and vehicle fluids. Tool hangers, like the Crawford®-brand smart system, work well to store tools and extension cords. The steel rail can be hung on any type of wall. Select models can hold up to 48 tools.
With these tips in mind we used two different Crawford® brand items to help us get a start on our garage.
I didn’t select a theme for the use of my new space, but instead I added miscellaneous items that the kids don’t need. We hung the mesh system and the smart system high above the reach of the kids. This is an easy method to help keep them safe.
I made sure to add my limb clippers as I always seem to misplace this handy tool. Now, I will remember it is safe and out of reach of the kids, but yet handy for me!
At this point I have our toxic chemical sprayer and the inflator pump, but I have space to include more. These s-hooks and clips make it easy to handy a variety of items. In fact I think I’d like one of these in a closet in the house as well.
I can not claim that our garage is mess free. Unfortunately it will take a bit more organization before we are at that point, but we did take the first steps.
Did you participate in National Clean Out Your Garage Day, today? Will you organize your garagea before winter?

Yes it is.
We don’t really have winter, but in either case, it’s never organized. We’ve tried a few times, but always fail because that garage sale never materializes, and we stink.
Getting there!
