New Children’s Books- Nighty-Night, Sleep Tight & The Big Bad Wolf Goes on Vacation & a Giveaway

While we are a family who loves a good movie, what might not be so apart on The Mama Report is that we are a family that loves books.   In fact, all of us “read” books everyday.  I put “read” in quotation marks, because of course my five and three year old don’t exactly read.  It is amazing what you can learn from books without even being able to understand the words.   My boys will sit for long periods of time engrossed in analyzing the pictures.  Yes- they are wild, loud, and crazy boys, but I revel in the fact that they love books just like their ol’ ma.

We recently received a selection of books from Sterling Publishing (more posts soon) and this first post highlights two new picture books available for children- Nighty-Night, Sleep Tight by Jennifer Berne and Illustrated by David Walker and also The Big Bad Wolf Goes on Vacation by Delphine Perret.

Nighty-Night, Sleep Tight is a sweet and beautifully illustrated picture book that features animals preparing for bed all over the world.  I love the geographical aspect of this book, as various countries and states are mentioned potentially triggering added discussion.  My three year old enjoyed this book because of the animals.  And I would recommend this book best for those children ages birth to 4 years of age.  But my five year old was also intrigued and as China was mentioned he was equally thrilled.  (On a side note- isn’t it funny what kids latch on to?  We don’t have any personal connect to the country of China, but my five year old son is fascinated by the idea that it is a real country on the other side of the world and that there are animals and people with different customs who live there.)

This book is a perfect soothing selection for bedtime reading.  This selection has a gentle melodic tone and calm engaging pictures I imagine many little “readers” will enjoy.

The Big Bad Wolf Goes on Vacation is obviously not a relaxing bed time read!   As is apparent from the cover this book it is humorous and geared for a bit older audience.  My five and eight year old thought it was hilarious.  Of course, my three year old giggles as well, but I’m pretty sure was laughing just because his older brothers were:)

Louis has a secret.  The Big Bad Wold lives in his closet.  And instead of being scary, Bernard- the wolf- if more annoying than frightening.  Soon Bernard and Louis join his Grandpa on a vacation to the sea.  An especially hilarious part is when Louis introduces The Big Bad Wolf to his Grandpa.  Grandpa’s remark is- And I am the queen of England.   My boys thought this was brilliant.  The book is full of witty banter that my older boys relish.  I find the illustrations to be simple and not to my personal taste, but they do fit the book and are the sort my boys enjoy.  I personally feel this book is best suited to children ages 4 to 9.

If you are looking for new books to add to your children’s collection or if you are searching for the perfect gift for little ones I highly recommend these two new selections from Sterling Publishing.
