About P. Allen Smith: P. Allen Smith is an award-winning garden and lifestyle designer and host of the public television program, P. Allen Smith’s Garden Home and the syndicated 30-minute show P. Allen Smith Gardens. Smith is one of America’s most recognized and respected garden design experts, providing ideas and inspiration through multiple media venues. I grew up watching my mother in the garden.  Mostly I watched her from a distance,  as I ran around the yard immersed in my own world of play.  Occasionally, when I was bored I would wander over her way and ask to “help”.   She would put me to work with whatever task she was working on.  My “working” minutes were few.  Now that I’m the adult I find myself starting my own garden.  How I wish I would have payed more attention or rather,  how I wish my mother was still here to guide me.    She was a seasoned vegetable gardener with years of experience.  Her knowledge was vast.  My knowledge?  Almost non-existent.  Luckily, I am not in this venture alone as my next door neighbor is partnered with me.  She too is a newbie and we plan on learning together through trial and error.  Last year (our first) was full of mistakes, but also a few vegetables too.   We are hopefully that this year will be even better.  Here is a picture of our garden.  We had hoped to get into the dirt early this year, but the weather did not permit early planting.  We actually had a frost advisory just this week!

In need of some gardening knowledge, I was eager to check out P. Allen Smith’s Veggies & Herbs collection.

Details

From containers of lettuce and rosemary to rows of broccoli and tomatoes, there’s nothing quite like growing your own produce, and garden designer and lifestyle expert P. Allen Smith shows you how with P. Allen Smith’s Veggies & Herbs. This card collection features 27 of Smith’s favorite herbs and vegetables, as well as corresponding recipes for a true garden-to-table experience. This collection also includes an hour-long DVD with additional how-to projects, organic care and pest control tips, and garden tours.

I found the cards to be a great reference guide.  The cards are broken into two different types- cool season and warm season.   I used these high quality card stock decks to know which vegetables I should plant first (cool season).  Each individual vegetable card includes basic information about the planting of that particular vegetable and a recipe on the reverse side.  Being a newbie,  the immensity of all the different kinds of vegetables and all the difference varieties can be overwhelming, but these cards did a great job of providing the basic necessary information that I needed.
While I found the cards to be very useful the DVD that accompanies it is less practical and more inspirational.  The DVD focuses more on special projects and not on basic vegetable gardening.  The DVD is broken into three main sections- Vegetable Garden Projects, Care & Control, and Garden Tours.
Vegetable Garden Projects includes- raised bed, cold frames, tomato baskets, and planting sweet tomatoes  ( I found all this information didn’t really apply to my garden)
Care & Control includes- growing a insectary (blooming flowers), lace wings, wasps, lady bugs, and fertilizer (Again I didn’t find this section very useful.  I was ready to learn about fertilizer, but I found this section to be too brief)
Garden Tours includes- Kansas School for the Blind, Mount Vernon, and Peterson Victory Garden in Chicago.  (While it was fun to see these mammoth gardens, it did not help me in my own particular situation)

For more information on P. Allen Smith visit his website which contains a wide variety of information on gardening and even includes recipes.
SanLori (the company that made the cards) is fun stationary company where you can purchase a wide variety of items such as- Invitation Stationery, Bridal Shower Invitations, Wedding Invitations, Party Invitations, Birth Announcements

My husband used to love to garden up until the time he had a bad fall and became wheelchair bound six plus years ago. Now I have taken my brown thumbs and been planting flowers and vegetables in pots on the deck so he can roll his wheelchair next to the pots. He can’t garden but he sure enjoys looking at the verbina, zinnas, tomatoes, lettuce, etc. I appreciate the help to my brown thumbs.
