Reading Under the Stars with the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge

I have been compensated for this post, all opinions are my own.

The 4th of July marks the midway point for summer vacation in my opinion.  In typical fashion the season is zipping by.  Luckily there is still plenty of time for more adventures and fun.  My boys have been enjoying “discovering” their books as we unpack and move into our new house.  I knew we had quite a few books, but I can definitely confirm that we have a LOT of books after recently moving every single one of them!

As we read we are logging our minutes as part of the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge.  As I previously mentioned my oldest son is super excited to potentially break a world recording.  His job? To read.  A challenge he gladly accepts. This year’s Summer Reading theme is Reading Under the Stars, and is powered by EVEREADY®, the maker of batteries and flashlights, to encourage families to discover new and fun ways to explore reading outside this summer.  Recently we gathered together with their cousin for a “Reading Under the Stars” themed event.  Most of our reading takes place in the family living room, but the kids had fun reading in a tent instead.

Since it doesn’t tend to become dark here until about 10pm we had to actually have our reading party in the daylight.  Most of our fellas are too young for that late of an evening.   A  few simple items created a backyard reading oasis.

  1. a tent (not mandatory, but it creates a little extra fun and also keeps out any nasty mosquitoes)
  2. a blanket (add to the tent or merely spread out in the grass)
  3. a few yummy snacks
  4. flashlights (if you are indeed reading under the stars)
  5. LOTS of BOOKS!

Of course for those that are too little to actually read on their own it’s best to have a few adults to hand for an impromptu story time!
