I reviewed this DVD with my 4 1/2 year old daughter. She had not had much exposure to the Veggie Tales previously, so I was very interested to see how she would react. She thoroughly enjoyed the previews, giggling and laughing out loud at some of the scenes. However, the movie itself has a more serious, sad undertone throughout. Early on in the movie, Junior Asparagus is feeling mad and sad due to a misunderstanding where he thinks his friends have ditched him while they went Christmas caroling. His grandpa shares with him the story of the Little Drummer Boy, in which Junior stars as the main character. The Little Drummer Boy lives through a tragedy where he loses his home and parents, and becomes a lost, lonely boy that doesn’t want to associate with other people, only his animal friends. My 4 1/2 year old had some difficulty staying focused on the story line, and I am not sure that she fully understood what was happening in the movie. She is used to watching movies that are more upbeat and fast-moving. Toward the end of the movie, the Little Drummer Boy comes upon the birth of the baby Jesus in the manger and learns some valuable lessons of hope, love, and forgiveness along the way. Overall, I thought the movie was well done, except that I would have preferred to have the story not quite as sad. I think if my child would have been older, she would have understood the story a little better, and probably would have enjoyed it more.
We also reviewed the accompanying CD, ‘Veggie Tales: O Holy Night – Journey of a Little Drummer Boy‘. The CD features such famous artists as: Amy Grant, Matthew West, Wynonna Judd, Steven Curtis Chapman, and BeBe and CeCe Winans. My daughter enjoyed all of the Christmas songs of this CD. As many of you parents know, some children’s CD’s can drive you bonkers especially if you are on a long car ride and have to listen for any lengthy period of time. This CD does not fall into that category. There is a good mix of songs sung in the character voices of the Veggie Tales and songs sung by the artists themselves. There is a little something for everyone on the CD. It is always good to listen to some fresh new Christmas music, as it seems like the radio stations choose the same Christmas songs to play year after year.
The ‘Veggie Tales: The Little Drummer Boy‘ DVD and ‘O Holy Night‘ CD together would make a great stocking stuffer for Veggie Tales fans.
Veggie Tales: Little Drummer Boy is available through Amazon for $11.99 and Veggie Tales: Little Drummer Boy
